STRIKE A POSE

Inspired by Troye Sivan’s music video for *One of Your Girls*, this piece draws from its minimalism and sensuality. Christian uses a restrained color palette to create human-like figures in various poses — echoing Troye’s fluid movements in the video. The composition features a denim blue center bordered by a soft mushroom white, with abstracted figures in titan buff spread across the canvas. Each form was carefully taped off with painter’s tape, sealed with a matte medium, and then painted with acrylics mixed with gloss medium to achieve a slight translucency. Brushed in a singular direction, the strokes suggest movement and texture. Once the layers reach the desired opacity, the tape is peeled away, revealing clean, crisp silhouettes. This painting marks one of Christian’s first ventures into exploring the human form in basic, geometric expression — experimenting with the positioning of major joints and the mechanics of how a body shifts and moves. A nod to the world of modeling and print — which Christian deeply admires — the piece captures the strength and fierceness needed to walk a runway or pose in front of the lens. There’s elegance in its restraint. At 24" tall by 18" wide, this neutral-toned artwork suits a variety of interiors, from commercial spaces to modern homes. While it is currently unframed, Christian envisions it someday housed in a custom frame wrapped in denim — a subtle homage to the piece’s deep blue core.

In the summer of 2023, Christian experienced a magical moment—waking up early in a foreign land, hiking up a beautiful mountain with a loved one, and witnessing the sunrise above a dark horizon. This painting, inspired by a photograph taken atop a mountain during his trip to Bali, captures that unforgettable experience. The gradual increase of light in the sky, the haze and clouds over the land, and the shadows of mountains and treetops are all surrounded by an off-white border, evoking the serenity and peace of that morning. Christian employed hard edges and warming tones to convey the profound impact of this experience. By mixing modelling paste with acrylic paint, he enhanced brush stroke visibility, adding texture and grit to the artwork. This technique, which he first explored in his painting titled “El Calafate,” has become a hallmark of his work. "Balinese Sunrise" represents one of his most simplified landscapes, embodying the challenge of knowing when to say “that is enough” in the creative process. Christian used acrylic paint mixed with modelling paste on canvas for "Balinese Sunrise." The painting stands at 45.7 cm tall by 61 cm wide (18 x 24 inches), and it does not include a frame. He hopes "Balinese Sunrise" brings the same sense of serenity and peace to its admirers as it does to him.

"STACKED" exemplifies Christian's mastery of contrasts and his deep admiration for architecture. In this piece, he skillfully merges complexity with simplicity, employing intricate drawing techniques to create geometric shapes that evoke architectural elements. These are juxtaposed against a minimalist, neutral color palette featuring shades like grayscale, burnt umber, Payne's gray, titan buff, dried mushroom, and graphite grey. The sky's hues are mirrored in the lower border, while the graphite grey of the ground is reflected in the upper border. Crisp, clean lines are achieved through the use of painter's tape and matte medium. Inspired by the acclaim for "Booktropolis" and the anticipation of his first art exhibition, Christian aimed to showcase his versatility and challenge himself to "keep things simple." Adhering to his rule that profiles facing right depict book pages, this painting embodies that concept. The "tower" in the piece can be interpreted as a subconscious expression of his loneliness as an only child, or as a testament to the idea of success—each cuboid representing an accolade or achievement, with the tower growing taller with each success or life lesson. Influenced by architecture, Christian stacks these rectangular prisms in a seemingly unorganized manner, highlighting the beauty of imperfection. On May 25th, 2024, "Stacked" was proudly displayed and sold at the inaugural ArtJam event in Toronto.
